Hello Singapore Interview: How to Stay Cool Indoors on a Hot Day

03 May 2024

Amidst the scorching heat, many people may prefer to stay indoors with the air conditioning on. However, running the air conditioner for extended periods not only incur significant electricity costs but also pose health risks. From an environmental perspective, it is not a sustainable solution. Is it possible to stay cool indoors without relying on air conditioning? According to Lim Chun Keat (林俊吉), Senior Manager at the SP School of Architecture & the Built Environment, the architectural design of HDB flats is built to help us cope with heat. For example, sunshades are installed by default on the east- and west-facing walls that receive more sunlight. Despite this, the walls absorb heat, which dissipates even into the night. People may consider avoiding placing their beds against the east- and west-facing walls to reduce feeling the heat that is being dissipated from the wall. In addition, maintaining good ventilation indoors is another good way to stay cool. People may arrange their furniture in a way that does not obstruct air circulation.
