Up to 90% of air-con units can be recycled, including greenhouse gas refrigerant

Under the National Environment Agency’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme launched in 2021, Gain City’s Sungei Kadut Megastore has been recycling and refurbishing thousands of air-conditioning units annually. As one of only two designated air-con recycling facilities in Singapore (the other being Alba’s Tuas facility), Gain City handles proper refrigerant disposal and recovers valuable metals like gold, brass, aluminium, and copper. Up to 90% of each unit can be recycled, but non-recyclable parts—like fan blades, styrofoam, and insulation piping—are typically sent to waste treatment plants. To address this, Gain City is collaborating with students from SP to explore ways to repurpose these materials into products like road paving components or water filters.
