Used to take studies lightly, now has achieved academic excellence

SP Diploma in Mechanical Engineering alumnus, Abdullah Bin Zainal, who has just graduated, now hopes to take his interest further and aspires to become a professor. He said when he was struggling with his 'N' level exams, he was 'saved' by one of his teachers who helped him improve his academic performance until he became the best student in the class. He did well and was accepted through the Polytechnic Foundation Programme. Abdullah, who was among the more than 5,000 SP students, received the Low Guan Onn Gold Medal – an award that recognises outstanding students. During his time in SP, he joined the SP Mentoring Club and mentored primary school children, as well as his juniors in SP. Initially, he was so focused on being the best student in SP that his grades deteriorated. However, with encouragement from friends and family, he changed his attitude and found a balance between his studies and his responsibilities in school. Abdullah, who was among the more than 5,000 SP students, received the Low Guan Onn Gold Medal – an award that recognises outstanding students. The former Dunman High School student said he often took his studies lightly during his secondary school years until he was faced with the 'N' level exams. Looking ahead, Abdullah, who is currently a scholarship recipient under the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), hopes to continue his studies and achieve his goal of becoming a professor.
