The semi-finals of “Xin Kong Xia” — a xinyao singing and songwriting competition — were held on Saturday, 12 July, at the MOE auditorium. The competition categories included solo singing, group singing, songwriting (creative category), and songwriting (open category). This year’s original compositions showcased an even greater diversity of styles, with participants boldly incorporating elements of rock, jazz, and R&B, injecting youthful vibrancy and richness into the xinyao genre. One of the contestants, SP student Bo Xi En, was participating in “Xin Kong Xia” for the first time, but she has already competed in countless singing competitions. Since the age of eight, she has aspired to become a pop singer. Her love for Mandarin music from a young age led her to enrol in the Diploma in Media, Arts and Design, specialising in Sound & Music. The original song she presented, “Want to Be With You”, is a straightforward love song which she wrote, composed, and performed herself. With strong support from her parents since childhood, Bo has stayed true to her musical dreams all the way. She hopes to make a living through songwriting and performing, and become a full-time singer in the future.
