Course Objective

SP's Media, Arts & Design School is pleased to introduce our new Diploma in Design (Visual Communication). This diploma comprising of 5 Modular Certificate (MC) courses, would provide pathways for those who are working or intend to work in Brand Design, Packaging Design, Web Design and Advertising.

Participants are required to bring computer notebook when attending lessons, as you may need it to access the e-learning materials, writing reports, etc.

The main objective of the course is to equip students with the concepts and practice of design as a communication language and creative ideation to establish an innovative experience with integration of various contemporary and new media, with emphasis on sensorial media channels in communication design.

Course Outline

The course consists of 5 Modular Certificate (MC) courses conducted over five semesters within 2.5 academic years. Classes will be a combination of online learning and classes conducted in two to three evenings per week for 15 weeks each semester. This will culminate to 900 curriculum hours over 5 semesters.

Each MC will consist of a few modules and the details are as follows:

MC 1 Certificate in Design Foundation
Module 1 – Principles of Design
Module 2 – Design History
Module 3 – Basic Drawing

MC 2 Certificate in Visual Design
Module 1 – Graphic Communication
Module 2 – Video Production

MC 3 Certificate in Brand Design
Module 1 – Brand Experience
Module 2 – Brand Communication

MC 4 Certificate in Web & Motion Design
Module 1 – Web Design
Module 2 – Motion Design

MC 5 Certificate in Communication Design
Module 1 – Communication Design
Module 2 – Portfolio Design

Minimum Requirements

Applicants with any of the following qualifications are invited to apply for the Part-Time diploma:

a) The following GCE 'O' Level grades and with at least 1 year of relevant working experience:

  • English Language  Grade 1 – 6
  • Mathematics (Elementary or Additional)  Grade 1 – 7
  • Any One other subject excluding CCA  Grade 1 – 6


b) Nitec with GPA >= 3.5

OR
c) Nitec with GPA >= 3.0 and at least 1 year of relevant working experience.

OR
d) Nitec in Technology/Services with GPA >= 3.5 and at least 1 year of relevant working experience.

OR
e) Higher Nitec with GPA >=2.0

OR
f) Higher Nitec with GPA >=1.5 and at least 1 year of relevant working experience.

OR
g) Higher Nitec in Technology/Services with GPA >=2.0 and at least 1 year of relevant working experience.

OR
h) Relevant WSQ Advanced Certificate (or higher) with at at least 1 year of relevant working experience and Level 6 for both WSQ Workplace Literacy SOA & Workplace Numeracy SOA

OR
i) Applicant with none of the qualifications listed above but at least 2 years of relevant working experience.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applicants who do not meet the entry requirements may be considered for admission to the course based on supporting evidence of competency readiness. Suitable applicants who are shortlisted may have to go through an interview and/or entrance test. The Polytechnic reserves the right to shortlist and admit applicants.

Certification / Accreditation


Upon completion of the modules in each semester, the participant will be awarded one Modular Certificate (MC) respectively.

Upon successfully acquiring the five MCs, the participant will be conferred a Diploma qualification from Singapore Polytechnic.

This course is tailored for current practitioners in the Communication Design industry who wish to upgrade their qualifications, as well as deepen their skills. It is also suitable for those who wish to acquire Communication Design knowledge and skills so as to prepare themselves for a career in Communication Design and attain professional qualifications in the future.
