From gaming to AI and teaching — 2 scholarship recipients' journeys through poly and beyond

Two individuals who began their education in less conventional streams have risen to academic and professional success, thanks in part to Singapore’s polytechnic and technical education system. Ernest Tan, now an Assistant Professor in Information and Communications Technology at SIT, was once a student in the EM3 and Normal (Technical) streams. Addicted to computer games in his youth, he enrolled in the ITE and later SP, where he studied Computer Engineering. He eventually earned a first-class honours degree and a PhD from NTU. Chen recently received the MOE START Inauguration Grant for his research in edge AI and industrial IoT. He now teaches and conducts research at SIT to make AI more accessible in daily life.
