My parents did not approve my choice on wanting to pursue my education in a polytechnic instead of a junior college initially. They think that going to a JC offers better opportunity to enrol into a local university in the future. I insisted on my decision to join Singapore Polytechnic and this became the motivating factor for me to excel in my studies so as to prove to them that my choice of entering a polytechnic is correct. In fact, this turned out to be one of the best decisions that I have made.
Studying in the Diploma in Integrated Events & Project Management course has allowed me to participate in various internal and external events during the 3 years in school. I gained invaluable experience and knowledge that can never be taught during curriculum hours.
The course offers me many opportunities to organise, plan and execute events along with my school mates and lecturers. For example, I was given the opportunity to organise the Singapore Polytechnic Open House 2015 during my Integrated Project module in my second year.
Apart from my parents, I believe that having helpful and fun group mates was another contributing factor for me in excelling in my studies. I really enjoyed the time spent with my project mates despite having to struggle with managing my time between my CCA and studies.
I am also grateful to be a part of SP Adventure Club (SPA) as the club has taught me to step out of my comfort zone, in participating in various outdoor sports such as trekking, adventure races, rock climbing, kayaking and cycling. Never did I thought that I would be the land training in-charge during my 2nd year - to conduct land trainings for our CCA members along with another 2 of my batch mates, Melvin and Joel. Aside from that, I was also given the opportunity to organise several land expeditions to Malaysia and a kayaking expedition to the Sisters’ Island. Most importantly, valuable friendships were forged from these trainings and expeditions. SPA has taught me how to take risks and conquer my fears to take up greater challenges in life.
Lastly, I am very blessed to be able to meet kind and helpful lecturers, bubbly classmates and CCA mates from Adventure Club, for making my journey in SP a memorable and fun one!
