After receiving a disappointing O-level result, I did not know what I wanted to pursue for my tertiary education. However, after working part-time in a banquet with my god-sister – who was also in the course – I decided that I really enjoyed the satisfaction of helping others and ensuring their big day goes successfully in the hotel industry, and so I enrolled into the Diploma in Hotel and Leisure Amenities Management (DHLFM) at Singapore Polytechnic.
At DHLFM, we were given a well-rounded education with a slight focus towards communication and presentation. This helped me step out of my comfort zone as I was pretty introverted. The most memorable part of the course would be my six-month internship with Marina Bay Sands. At Marina Bay Sands, I had the opportunity to experience the industry first-hand and learned a lot from the professionals in the hotel. Not only was the internship enriching and interesting, it was also pretty fun learning how to mix cocktails and serve them to the guests. The internship really helped me grow as a person and affirmed my interest in the service industry.
In SP, I also decided to join SP MindSports as my CCA. Being the Vice-President of the club really challenged me as it was my first time leading and organising an event. I had to coordinate training sessions for my club as well as helped organise an open chess competition. This experience really helped in developing my interpersonal and leadership skills.
To all the lecturers and to Singapore Polytechnic, thank you for making my journey here a memorable and fruitful one!
