It was an eventful three days at BEX Asia 2024! Held from 4 – 6 September at the Sands Expo & Convention Centre, the event showcased Singapore Polytechnic’s (SP) commitment to transforming the Built Environment (BE) sector. We highlighted our strategic partnerships and innovative solutions designed to enhance productivity, embrace digital technologies, and promote sustainability within the industry. We were also honoured by the presence of Minister for National Development, Mr Desmond Lee, who joined us for the launch of the Built Environment Transformation Learning Journey (BETLJ), observed the signing of our key memoranda of understanding (MOUs), and explored the SP booth.
Strategic Partnerships
During the event, SP solidified collaborations with key industry leaders:
- British Standards Institution (BSI Singapore): This partnership focuses on developing a skilled sustainability workforce through Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Practitioner and Professional certifications. These credentials will assist organisations in achieving net-zero goals through precise, evidence-based GHG emissions reporting.
- ISS Facility Services: This alliance aims to drive innovation and productivity in the Built Environment-Facilities Management sector. We will develop curricula, organise Learning Journeys centred on Smart FM technologies and sustainability, and provide students with valuable industry attachment and internship opportunities.
- Kajima Development: This collaboration promotes innovation through joint Learning Journeys, support for SP startups, and the utilisation of Kajima's The GEAR Lab as a living laboratory for testing new solutions.
- Soilbuild Construction Group: Our partnership focuses on enhancing productivity and digital adoption through joint projects and talent development. It also creates opportunities for SP students to participate in industry projects, internships, and potential scholarships.
Launch of BE Transformation Learning Journey (BETLJ)
We are excited to announce the launch of the Built Environment (BE) Transformation Learning Journey (BETLJ), supported by the Building and Construction Authority (BCA). This initiative is designed to provide SMEs and students with a comprehensive view of the evolving BE sector.
For SMEs, the BETLJ will demonstrate how leading companies are adopting transformative practices and new technologies. It offers valuable support for strategic planning, including training programmes and funding assistance to help businesses adapt and thrive.
For students, the BETLJ will showcase forward-thinking companies within the BE sector, highlighting its dynamic and innovative nature. This initiative aims to inspire both current and prospective students by revealing exciting career opportunities with organisations that are at the forefront of sustainability and innovation.
Panel Discussion: Harnessing the Potential of Industry-Academia Collaborations
The panel discussion, led by SP’s Dr Faris Hajamaideen and Mr Fann Zhi Jie, and featuring SP alumnus Mr Pan Yi Cheng, Founder and Principal Architect of Type 0 Architects, delved into the transformative power of industry-academia collaborations. The session highlighted how these partnerships are reshaping curricula, preparing students for future challenges, and driving innovation within the Built Environment (BE) sector. Dr Faris and Zhi Jie shared valuable insights on how academic research can address real-world industry issues, emphasising the critical role of such collaborations in advancing both education and industry practices.

BEX Asia 2024 has been a fantastic platform for SP to demonstrate our commitment to advancing sustainability, digitalisation, and innovation within the BE sector. Our new partnerships with BSI, Kajima Development, Soilbuild Construction Group, and ISS Facilities Singapore are set to drive meaningful impact, support SMEs, and nurture the next generation of talent.
