With advancement of digital technologies, maritime training in classroom could be greatly enhanced using immersive technologies. CEMS showcased the following digital solutions and simulator platform to enhance maritime training assessment and delivery

  1. 360 Video Editor Tool for Maritime Training

Maritime training such as pre-boarding familiarisation is important, even more so in a COVID environment where change of crew remains a challenge. There could be very limited window for pre-boarding briefing and familiarisation. This project aims to create a user friendly software tool that allows the user to auto stitch the 360 degree images together and create immersive videos for in-house training for the industry. Point of interest as well as information overlay could be easily added. Companies can use the tool to create their own 360 training videos that could be loaded on a mobile phone, a tablet or a personal computer.

  1. VR scenarios for dangerous operations

Scenarios such as Launch of Freefall Lifeboat and LNG Gas Leakage involve high risk to life and maritime assets if encountered at sea. Current classroom training is not ideal since the trainees will not be able to have the experiential learning opportunities as these exercises at sea also involve high risk. To address these challenges, CEMS embarked on VR scenario creations for high risk scenarios with a goal to enhance the training standards of our training institute and safety for the maritime industry.

  1. The next generation simulator consist of an Advance Navigation Research Simulator (ARNS) and a Next Generation Navigation simulator (ANRS).

ANRS has a Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) System which is connected to the Ship Bridge that simulates VTS operations which include ship to shore communications. Some of the new operational concepts such as E-Nav, which requires shared situational awareness between ship and shore, could be tested at the ANRS. CEMS, together with NTU/Fraunhofer is working with MPA Ops on the human factor for NGVTMS, to ensure our VTS operators are equipped with the necessary skillset for increased level of automation.

NGNS (under development) will be a collaboration with Wartsila Digital to develop local capabilities in a strategic area that positions Singapore for future maritime operations. NGNS will allow us to study new Concept of Operations such as remote and autonomous operations in Singapore waters and design training curriculum for shore based operations to future ready our navigators.

ANRS and NGNS will be a national research facility that are open to industry as well as other IHLs and RIs in the research community. They will allow research not only into human factors but the new digital skills and domain knowledge that are required to operate remote controlled and autonomous ships in a shore control centre.
