People now have longer lifespans because of great advances in medical care and public health. But are we living better?

Asia faces rapidly ageing populations, with countries like Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, and China already classified as “aged economies”. According to Ageing Asia, the Asia-Pacific’s ageing market value is expected to reach US$ 4.56 trillion by 2025 with an ageing population of 600 million.

Nutrition is key in supporting healthy ageing. Consumers increasingly see food as preventive medicine, and understand the need to maintain a healthy, balanced diet. They seek nutrient-dense foods that are easily metabolised to provide energy, with adequate proteins and nutrients to prevent ailments and diseases.

Food businesses need to adapt to these new consumer needs. The design of food products and services for healthy ageing should go beyond stereotypes and appeal to a wider target audience beyond the seniors aged 60 and above. In Asia, there are untapped opportunities to provide a wider variety of such enhanced, functional food targeted at the ageing population. Besides health, Asian consumers also seek holistic solutions that enable physical and mental wellbeing.
