18-year-old MP

The Singapore Model Parliament continues to provide young Singaporeans with a unique opportunity to experience the legislative process. The annual event simulates parliamentary proceedings, allowing participants to debate key national issues and propose policy solutions. Among the participants in the 2023 edition was SP student Yang Qinkai, who was just 18-years-old at the time. Despite his age, he displayed a keen interest in governance and policymaking. Reflecting on his participation, he stated, "The rising cost of living affects all aspects of life, and policies to address it must take a multi-faceted approach while considering the needs of different groups." He added, "I signed up for the Model Parliament because I wanted to experience the legislative system and process firsthand." During the sessions, participants took on roles as “government” and “opposition” members, debating topics such as cost-of-living concerns. The simulated parliamentary sitting aimed to give youth a deeper understanding of Singapore’s legislative framework while enhancing their critical thinking and public speaking skills. Each year, the programme attracts hundreds of applicants, with only about 100 selected. Participants include students from polytechnics, junior colleges, universities, and specialised institutes, as well as national servicemen and youths awaiting further studies.
