Make money while being eco-friendly, Turning trash into business opportunities

05 Jan 2025

Students from SP’s School of Business have been participating in the polytechnic’s Business Essentials Through Action (BETA) programme. Each group receives a $1,000 startup fund, with one of the key requirements being that the business must be sustainable and align with one of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Mr Lucas Tok, Acting Deputy Senior Director of SP’s Business & Creatives Cluster, said, “We hope students learn how to create a greater positive impact on society through entrepreneurship. Sustainability is not just about whether the business can thrive long-term but also its impact on the environment.” SP launched the BETA programme in 2020 and signed a memorandum of understanding with the National Volunteer & Philanthropy Centre (NVPC) two months ago to further develop this programme. Starting from this academic year, BETA has been made available to all first-year business students, whereas it was previously limited to a select group. The students from SP’s School of Business will be showcasing their start-ups at SP’s Open House from 9 to 11 January.
