EEE Team MNKS X CO2 clinched first place and People’s Choice Award in Samsung Solve for Tomorrow competition
EEE Team MNKS X CO2 clinched the first place and the People’s Choice Awards at the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow 2021 competition in the post-secondary category launched on 7 Oct 2021. The winners were announced on 2 Mar 2022. Supported by the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) under its Digital for Life initiative, the annual competition provides a platform for youths to utilise their knowledge to solve real-world problems, using the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) approach, and make a meaningful impact on the community. It also empowers students to develop tangible innovations that can potentially be implemented at scale, thus igniting their entrepreneurial spirit. The competition was held from 6 Oct to 31 Dec 2021 and consisted of 3 main phases: general submission, shortlist, and finalist. In each phase, teams were judged based on the feasibility, creativity, and technical aspects of their ideas. The winning EEE team conceptualised a biofilter for vehicles with a biofilm made of genetically engineered Escherichia coli (E.Coli) bacteria that can consume carbon dioxide while emitting oxygen gas. With vehicle carbon emissions being a key factor in climate change, the team hopes its E.Coli-driven biofilter could help combat climate change by reducing carbon dioxide emissions. The students were guided by Mr. Roger Chiun. Details of the participating students are as follows:
