MATHEMATICAL AND SCIENTIFIC THINKING FRAMEWORK (MSTF)
The School of Mathematics and Science aims to develop mathematical and scientific thinking in our students. To achieve this, we adopt a mathematical and scientific thinking framework (MSTF) for the design and development of our modules. The mathematical and scientific thinking framework is adapted from Professor Alan H. Schoenfeld’s work on problem-solving, metacognition and sense-making, and is outlined as follows:
Using a backward design, we work backwards from the desired educational outcomes in the framework then design our course notes, tutorials, learning activities and videos accordingly. To guide the design of our instructional materials, we have a checklist of good design practices for each curriculum component. The checklist is also used for the evaluation of our modules for curriculum improvement.
