Clarice Sim - Recipient of
President’s Award for Teachers 2024
Our educators continue to make SP proud! Clarice Sim is this year's recipient of the prestigious President's Award for Teachers (PAT).
As a Teaching and Learning Mentor at SP’s Media, Arts & Design School, Clarice Sim does not just teach - she transforms learning experiences. With a keen eye for data and an unwavering commitment to her students, Clarice has spent 11 years at SP redefining what it means to educate in the digital age.
Clarice’s motivation to become a teacher stems from her experience as a quiet, almost “invisible” student throughout her early education. It was not until university that a professor truly recognised her potential and offered her encouragement and support. This pivotal moment transformed her academic journey. Inspired by the profound impact that one attentive educator had on her life, Clarice became determined to be that same guiding light for her students. Driven by a deep commitment to ensure every student feels seen, valued, and empowered; Clarice strives to help each one reach their full potential, always with a deep sense of empathy.
Before joining SP, Clarice's career journey included diverse roles that enriched her perspective. Her experience in policy and research honed her analytical skills and deepened her understanding of the different facets of research, which she now applies in her teaching.
Clarice’s dedication to education extends beyond her classroom. As a Teaching and Learning Mentor, she empowers other lecturers by sharing her expertise in quantitative research, helping them navigate analytics dashboards, and designing better surveys to assess student progress and lesson effectiveness. Her commitment to the purposeful use of data in education underscores her belief that teaching should be both impactful and meaningful.
Her innovative approach to education, particularly through spearheading the use of Data-enabled Flipped Learning (DEFL) in MAD School, has transformed how students engage with learning materials. DEFL goes beyond traditional flipped learning by leveraging data from online assessments, surveys, and polls to tailor lessons to each student's unique needs. This method ensures that every student receives a personalised learning experience, effectively creating a “classroom of one.”
Clarice aspires to continue growing and learning, inspired by the resilience of her students. She firmly believes that “failure is not the end but a step in the learning process”, and she encourages her students to embrace challenges with determination, instilling in them a sense of hope and inspiration.
Clarice embodies the spirit of innovation and empathy in education, making her an invaluable asset to SP. Her dedication to going above and beyond has not only transformed the lives of her students but has also set a standard of excellence that motivates her colleagues. Congratulations Clarice!
