A social entrepreneur and sustainability champion
From her early days as a leader at Commonwealth Secondary School, serving as badminton captain and student union representative, Mikki Chan Shi Hui exhibited a natural knack for leadership and an entrepreneurial mindset. This steered her
to pursue Singapore Polytechnic’s (SP) Diploma in Business Administration (DBA) with a specialisation in Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
Driven by a deep-rooted passion for creating positive change in society, the Low Guan Onn Gold Medallist co-founded a start-up, “Pomona”, with a group of classmates during her time at SP. Mikki says this venture, born out of her dual passion for food and sustainability, is her proudest achievement. As a self-proclaimed foodie, Mikki was inspired by the sight of bruised fruits being discarded by vendors. This sparked an innovative idea to repurpose these fruits into nougat snack bites, a concept that seamlessly merged her love for food with her commitment to reducing food waste.
Mikki’s journey as an entrepreneur was not a bed of roses. Securing funding proved to be a significant challenge, but Mikki’s unwavering determination saw her through. She secured seed funding of over S$30,000 by participating in numerous national pitching competitions, including the Young Innovators Challenge and the Youth Action Challenge. Mikki says the experience has equipped her with resourcefulness and adaptability.
While at SP, Mikki actively participated in various Co-Curricular Activities (CCAs) and engaged in community service initiatives. With a heart to serve others, she volunteered her time to several CCAs, including SP’s Welfare Services Club, Peer Support Club, Community Service and Cultural Club, School of Business Club, and the Sign Language Club. She also held notable positions, showcasing her commitment to inclusivity and community awareness.
As a SP Sign Language Club member, Mikki served as secretary and publicity and design Head. Her involvement in this club was sparked by a memorable encounter during her secondary school years when she witnessed a group of deaf individuals communicating in sign language during lunchtime. The experience intrigued her and fuelled her decision to join the Sign Language Club upon entering SP. Recognising the importance of bridging communication gaps between the hearing and deaf communities, she took it upon herself to advocate for greater understanding and proficiency in sign language among students.
Excited by the array of opportunities awaiting her, Mikki plans to embark on the apprenticeship programme at JP Morgan, a renowned financial institution, for a year before furthering her studies. Opting for this path would allow her to gain hands-on experience and industry insights while working alongside seasoned professionals. She notes that this would be a valuable stepping stone for her future career endeavours, as she hopes to take her start-up to greater heights.
Mikki aspires to innovate and create solutions that not only generate profits but also bring about meaningful change, leaving a legacy for future generations.
