Cooking Hainanese Chicken Rice can never be too difficult now. Just open the pouch, pour contents into a rice cooker and a plate of hot aromatic rice is ready to be eaten in 20 mins. Called the Yamie rice, this was developed by staff and 2 students for Gan Hup Lee Pte Ltd.
The two second year students from the Diploma in Food Science & Technology course were identified to fine tune the formulation at the factory and to develop more product range. During their internship at the company, they developed 4 more types: Yam Rice, Mixed Brown Rice with Anchovies, Mixed Brown Rice, and Garlic Rice.
The company was very impressed by the students' performance and the project will be extended as a final year project. Press release was conducted at the Polytechnic on 19 April '06. News on Yamie rice was broadcasted on radio 93.3, 95.8 and Channel News Asia. Shin Min.
