Food for thought: How he learnt to excel and found his calling through hands-on learning

03 Jun 2024

The Straits Times, 03 Jun 2024 - Nicholas Sim Jing Xiang, faced significant academic challenges. He took his A-level examinations three times and failed to qualify for any of the local universities. Despite this, his passion for food science, sparked by a food product development project at NTU during his time at Jurong Junior College, led him to pursue SP Diploma in Food Science and Technology (DFST) course. Graduating as valedictorian, Nicholas attributed his success to the course’s blend of academic learning and practical experience, including vital industry work attachments. These opportunities helped him apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings and gain deeper insights into the food industry. He has now secured a place at NTU, and will begin his undergraduate studies in biological sciences, with a second major in food science and technology.
