Develop skills in eyecare

Throughout your educational journey, we foster an appreciation for optimal eye health and eyesight, equipping you with the competencies needed to skilfully manage conditions such as myopia and presbyopia, detect common eye diseases and correct vision with spectacles and contact lenses.

Real-world training and exposure

Beyond the classroom, you will engage in hands-on training to advance your skills. Harness state-of-the-art technology at the SP Optometry Centre and work with real clients from the first year, levelling up in responsibilities as you hone your skills. Through industrial attachments, a 22-week internship and overseas attachments, you’ll broaden your perspectives, learn best practices from the industry and network with peers and professionals.

Accreditation that opens doors

Become a licensed optometrist registered with the Optometrists and Opticians Board (OOB), governed by the Ministry of Health. This license opens doors to a wide range of career prospects in areas such as community optometry clinics, ophthalmology clinics, hospitals, multinational manufacturing companies, or research institutions. If you are enterprising, create a canvas for innovation and expertise with your very own practice.

Course Highlights

SP is the first tertiary institution in Singapore to offer the Diploma in Optometry course (since 1994)
The course is the first to receive full accreditation from Optometrists and Opticians Board (OOB) in 2008
The course is accredited by many local and overseas universities, opening opportunities for exemptions or direct entry into the second or third year of related degree programmes

Experience hands-on learning opportunities from your first year, including industrial attachments to hospitals, optometric practices, and lens companies. Enhance your practical skills and knowledge through a 22-week internship in the final semester

Singapore Polytechnic Optometry Centre

Singapore Polytechnic Optometry Centre serves as the clinical training facility for Optometry students. There are 15 fully-equipped consulting and special examination rooms.

SP Optometry has equipped me with the necessary knowledge and skills required for me to be an optometrist. With the availability of SP Optometry Centre, a wide range of diagnostic instruments and quality lectures provided by passionate lecturers, I am confident that I am able to provide detailed eye examinations, eye care services and recommend optical appliances for the public.
