Course Objective

Following the passing of the Personal Data Protection (Amendment) Bill in parliament on Nov 2020, companies are recruiting Data Protection Officers (DPO) to safeguard their data.

To meet DPO demand, the School of Computing (SoC) is launching a this course to train graduates necessary skills and knowledge in the area of Data Protection, Data Innovation, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) Governance. These skills would help their companies strengthen data protection practices and uncover operational risks, threats, and vulnerabilities in a data-driven economy.

The Specialist Diploma in Data Protection and AI Governance is a Part-Time course, typically taking about One year to complete and is conducted via hybrid teaching mode (comprising 70% Face-to-Face and 30% E-learning sessions). It is suitable for Degree or Diploma holders, wishing to be DPO or double-hat as the role.

This course aims providing training and awareness in Data Protection, including developing a Data Protection Management Programme, addressing business risks, managing Cyber and data breach incidents, as well as developing stakeholder engagement plans.

In addition, training in Data Innovation, with modules such as Data Ethics, Data Sharing, Design Thinking, and Data Protection by Design and AI Governance are included. The Design Thinking and Data Protection by Design module trains participants to design innovative digital solutions incorporating good data protection practices.

The course curriculum is aligned with the DPO Competency Framework and Training Roadmap, preparing graduates for DPO job functions and work responsibilities in the exciting field of Data Protection and Data Innovation.

Course Outline

The course consists of five modules conducted over two semesters within One academic year. Classes will be conducted in two evenings per week and 1 evening is e-learning for 15 weeks each semester.

This course consists of 2 Post-Diploma Certificates (PDCs). Each PDC will consist of two or three modules and the details are as follows:

PDC 1 Certificate in Data Protection and Cyber Breach Management
Module 1 – Data Protection Management (6 weeks, 60 hours)
Module 2 – Cyber Breach Response and Business Risk Management (6 weeks, 60 hours)
Module 3 – Data Governance and Compliance (3 weeks, 30 hours)

PDC 2 Certificate in Data Innovation, AI Governance and Ethics
Module 4 – AI Governance, Data Sharing and Ethics (6 weeks, 60 hours)
Module 5 – Design Thinking and Data Protection by Design (6 weeks, 60 hours)

Minimum Requirements

The entry requirement for the Specialist Diploma in Data Protection and AI Governance is a polytechnic diploma or higher qualification in any discipline from a local Public Sector Educational Institution (PSEI)

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applicants, not meeting the entry requirements, may be considered for admission, based on evidence of at least 5 years of relevant working experience or supporting evidence of competency readiness. Shortlisted applicants will have to go through an interview and/or entrance test. The Polytechnic reserves the right to shortlist and admit applicants.

Certification / Accreditation

Upon completion of the modules in each semester, the participant will be awarded one Post-Diploma Certificate (PDC) respectively.

Upon successfully acquiring the two PDCs, the participant will be conferred a Specialist Diploma in Data Protection and AI Governance qualification from Singapore Polytechnic.

Suitable for

Diploma/Degree holders, newly appointed DPO, or Compliance Officers who handle and process their customers, employees, and providers data. Graduates will be sufficiently trained to be DPO or double-hat as the role, in their organisations.
