Beginning with hazard and risk identification provides a foundational understanding of potential safety concerns. Assessing toxicity by interpreting toxicological data builds on this foundation by offering insights into the specific health risks associated with individual ingredients. Analysing the mechanisms of skin compatibility and sensitization reactions deepens this knowledge, enabling a nuanced understanding of how products interact with the skin. Finally, establishing acceptable safety levels ensures that all products are formulated within safe exposure limits, protecting consumer health. This structured sequence ensures a comprehensive, science-based approach to developing safe and effective cosmetic products.

Course Objective

This course equips participants with skills and knowledge on how to identify hazards and risks, interpret toxicology and safety data of cosmetic ingredients, and assess safety of Personal Care Products

Course Outline

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  1. Differentiate hazard and risk
  2. Assess the toxicity of the cosmetic material using LD50, EC10 and the dose-response curve
  3. Interpret toxicology and safety data (from animal and/or non-animal testing) of cosmetic ingredients for mutagenicity, carcinogenicity, reproductive and developmental toxicity, organ toxicity, irritation, sensitisation and photo-toxicity
  4. Differentiate local and systemic toxicological endpoints
  5. Evaluate the lists of prohibited and restricted cosmetic ingredients and the acceptable safety levels of exposure to cosmetic formulations
  6. Establish acceptable safety levels of exposure to cosmetic and fragrance materials (IFRA standard)
