Solar energy remains the most promising renewable energy source for Singapore when it comes to electricity generation. With an average annual solar irradiance of 1,580 kWh/m2/year and about 50 percent more solar radiation than temperate countries, solar photovoltaic (PV) generation has the greatest potential for a wider deployment in Singapore.
With the rapid growth in solar power demand in Singapore, M&E engineers and technicians need to be equipped with the knowledge and technical skills of solar power system and know how to deploy the solar technologies in the country. Other professionals and non-technical people will also benefit from knowing the solar technology and its applications.
This 1-day course is proposed to provide engineers and technicians working in the electrical power industry as well as non-technical people with necessary knowledge and technical skills for design, installation and maintenance of a solar PV system.
This course is aligned with the Technical Skill Competency (TSC) of the Singapore Skills Framework of the electrical sector for the roles of electrical technicians, assistant engineer or engineers to design, install, testing and commissioning solar PV systems. The course also helps non-technical people to learn know-how of solar system.
In this 1-day course, the participant will learn the principles of using solar panel to produce electricity, understanding two common types of solar PV systems in use, selection of the main components of a solar system (solar panels, inverters, charge controller &battery), design and connection of a solar system. The course is hands-on based and conducted in the laboratory and site.
1.Introduction of solar energy
• Understand how much solar energy available in Singapore
• Variation of solar energy in a year
• Selection of site for solar PV system
2.Understand the principles of main components of a solar system by experiment
• How solar cell and panel convert sunlight to electricity
• How to connect and test the solar panels
• How does an inverter work
• The battery and its function in a solar power system
3.Size and selection of system components
• Size and selection of solar panels
• Size and selection of inverter
• Size and selection of battery
