Course Objective

Electrical power plays an essential role in development of a nation. A reliable and economic supply of electricity is essential for effectively and productively operating Singapore’s industries. However, an efficient and well-planned power system, operated by skilful operators, only can achieve this result. Hence, Electrical engineers, with knowledge of power system planning, operation and protection, are greatly demanded.

This course provides participants with such training to perform planning, designing, operating, protecting, and managing of Electrical power systems.

Course Outline

This course consists of 2 modular Post-Diploma Certificates (PDC). Each PDC is designed to be completed in one academic semester and is made up of two 60-hour modules. Upon completion of two PDCs (a total of 240 hours) within a maximum period of 2 years, participants will be awarded the Specialist Diploma in Power System Planning, Operation and Protection.

Upon completion of the Specialist Diploma, participants can choose to pursue two additional PDCs to obtain the Advanced Diploma in Power System Engineering.

PDC 1 Certificate in High Voltage Operation & Protection
Module 1 – High Voltage Operation (60 hours)
Module 2 – Power System Protection (60 hours)

PDC 2 Certificate in Power System Planning, Security, Transmission & Distribution
Module 1 – Power System Planning and Control with Security (60 hours)
Module 2 – Power Transmission and Distribution (60 hours)

Minimum Requirements

Must possess a relevant Polytechnic Engineering Diploma (Diploma in Electrical Engineering, Diploma in Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Diploma in Engineering with Electrical or Power Engineering major, or other relevant diplomas) from recognised institutions or equivalent qualifications. Preference will be given to those with relevant working experience

Applicants should not have colour deficiency

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applicants, not meeting the entry requirements, may be considered, based on evidence of at least 5 years of relevant working experience or supporting evidence of competency readiness. Shortlisted applicants may have to go through an interview and/or entrance test. The Polytechnic reserves the right to shortlist and admit applicants.

Certification / Accreditation


Upon completion of two Post-Diploma Certificates, the participant will be conferred a Specialist Diploma in Power System Planning, Operation and Protection from Singapore Polytechnic.

Practising Engineers and Technologists involved in the planning, designing, operating, protecting, and managing Power systems in Mechanical & Electrical Consultancy, Plant Operations, Energy and Power, Petrochemical, Public Transport, and Construction industries
