CODE OF CONDUCT
Singapore Polytechnic is an institution for students to pursue further education and character development. It is where every person is to be treated with mutual respect and dignity in interactions and communications.
As part of the student community, each student is to assume responsibility for knowing and upholding the Student Code of Conduct, and is expected to conduct himself/herself in ways that promote a safe and respectful community within the Polytechnic and in the greater community outside the Polytechnic.
The Student Code of Conduct represents our ideals for character development and behaviour. It encompasses six core values, namely, Self-discipline, Personal Integrity, Care and Concern, Openness, Responsibility and Excellence - SP CORE.
Self discipline
We shall
- live a healthy lifestyle
- observe the rules of the Polytechnic
- be law-abiding, and
- conduct ourselves well at all times
Personal integrity
We shall
- be truthful in our speech
- be honest in our dealings
- be trustworthy and reliable in our deeds, and
- have the courage to admit and learn from our mistakes
Care and concern
We shall
- be courteous and respectful
- be considerate towards others and respect the diversity of cultures, races and religions
- help those in need, and
- treat others as we would like others to treat us
Openness
We shall
- appreciate the views of others
- seek knowledge with an enquiring mind
- be receptive to new ideas, and
- be transparent in our dealings
Responsibility
We shall
- take good care of public property and the environment
- take ownership of our personal and professional development
- take pride in producing quality work, and
- conduct ourselves in a responsible manner
Excellence
We shall aim for excellence in everything we do.
General
- To observe proper decorum (in behaviour, attire and hairstyle) that is befitting of a Singapore Polytechnic student.
- Do not engage in any activity that will bring disrepute to Singapore Polytechnic (SP).
- To comply with all standing regulations including those that are issued from time to time.
- Enquiries on other rules and regulations concerning student activity can be directed to the Student Development Officer, Department of Student Development and Alumni Relations.
Behaviour
- Do not smoke in and around the Polytechnic premises. Under the Tobacco (Control of Advertisements and Sale) Act, it is an offence for an under-aged person to use or to be in possession of any tobacco product. Under-aged as defined by the law is laid out in the government gazette.
- Behave with propriety at all times, that is, no disrespectful behaviour and insubordination to lecturers and officers of SP.
- Refrain from any conduct that demeans, intimidates, threatens, harasses or injures any individual, such as bullying, fighting, making derogatory/discriminatory/racist remarks, and performing an act that could amount to sexual misconduct (including but not limited to sexual assault, outrage of modesty, voyeuristic act).
- Always carry with you your Polytechnic Student Card, and produce it when requested by the Polytechnic authorities (e.g. lecturer, security personnel).
- Do not drink or eat in the class/laboratory/workshop/ library.
- Do not consume alcohol.
- Do not misuse or abuse substances such as drugs, inhalants, psychoactive drugs (e.g. heroin, cocaine, ecstasy pill).
- Do not ride or carry a pillion rider without wearing a crash helmet on campus.
- Do not flout Personal Mobility Aid, Personal Mobility Device, Bicycle rules.
- Do not gamble.
- Do not litter.
- No fighting or acts of disturbance.
- Do not listen to audio devices or viewing video devices, including mobile phones in class, unless it is part of learning activities in class as directed by the lecturer.
- No unauthorised removal of polytechnic property, including books from the library. This is tantamount to theft.
- No unauthorised entry to any premises.
- Do not steal Polytechnic property or belongings of other students.
- Do not use mobile phones during lessons and assessments/tests.
- Do not damage or lose Polytechnic property. Always report any damage or loss of Polytechnic property to the nearest instructor, lecturer or any Polytechnic staff. Please call 6772-1234, 6772-1411 or 6772-1628 to report any loss or damage.
- Do not forge medical certificates or other official documents.
- Males must not intrude into the ladies toilet and vice versa.
- No unauthorised audio or video recording of lessons (eg. tutorials, workshops, practicals), as well as any dialogues, meeting proceedings and/or, conversations with SP staff.
- To observe all Student Disciplinary Rules & Regulations (please refer to the Student Handbook link: Disciplinary Rules & Regulations).
Attire
- Wear proper attire at all times.
- Do not wear any form of attire (including slogans on T-shirts), which may be offensive.
- Pre-sea students should always wear their uniform as required in classes.
- Covering of face with veil, cloth or mask is not allowed on campus.
Attire At Workshops/Laboratories
- Students attending workshops/laboratories must wear proper attire and shoes.
- Do not wear loose clothing, which may get entangled with running machines.
- Students with long hair should tie it up properly.
- Safety shoes and footwear are required in workshops/laboratories.
- Always comply with industrial safety rules as directed by the lecturer or instructor-in-charge.
Students who misbehave in class/ laboratory/ workshop/ library/ sports or other facilities may be asked to leave the premises by the staff of the polytechnic.
Failure to abide by these rules may render you liable for disciplinary action.
Violation of the Student Code of Conduct
Singapore Polytechnic, as a caring educational community, does not tolerate any form of misconduct, be it physical or psychological harm, harassment or violence directed against any person. Students engaging in such misconduct are subject to disciplinary actions and the punitive actions to be imposed may include dismissal, suspension and/or other penalties.
Incident Reporting
If you witness or encounter any such misconduct, immediately inform your Personal Tutor, Lecturer or Course Chair. You may also report such misconduct to the campus security at 6772-1234 or approach your school admin office for advice.
The Polytechnic student counsellors are available to provide support if you need help and they can be reached at the One Stop Centre (OSC). You can also make an appointment by requesting for a session online via e-Services.
