The sizable and growing Singaporean elderly generally have limited or lack knowledge of English. This poses a communication barrier for the elderly who are unable to communicate with the mostly English-speaking younger generation. The elderly are also not able to communicate with all the 3 major ethnic groups in Singapore who do not speak their mother tongue. The course will cover basic spoken and written so that the elderly can interact more effectively with their English-speaking colleagues, customers, and members of the public.
The Basic English course focuses on enhancing English communication across the 4 major ethic groups in Singapore for social and work interactions. Participants will explore English varieties like Singaporean, British and American English, their use and pronunciation, and language learning apps. The course includes using online tools, practising body language, and improving listening through movie scenes. It covers greetings, apologies, and goodbyes across cultures, and teaches effective questioning, email composition, and conversational skills. Role-playing scenarios and descriptive tasks will refine speaking and comprehension, while practical exercises with numbers and price-related vocabulary will boost everyday language use. Overall, the course equips participants with practical skills for diverse English-speaking contexts.
