This course will cover basic spoken and written skills for the elderly, letting them effectively communicate with their English-speaking colleagues, customers, and other members of the public.

Course Objective

British, and American English as well as their use, pronunciation, and language learning apps. Furthermore, online tools, practising body language, improving listening through movie scenes, greetings, apologies, goodbyes across different cultures, effective questioning, email composition, and conversational skills are covered. Additional programmes, like role-playing scenarios and descriptive tasks will refine speaking and comprehension skills. Lastly, practical exercises with numbers and price-related vocabulary will boost daily language use. Overall, participants will be equipped with practical skills for diverse English-speaking contexts.

Course Outline

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate correct pronunciation of the alphabet (British vs American English)
  2. Identify Singaporean English and other varieties
  3. Assess the suitability of apps for different learning goals
  4. Implement selected strategies in a language learning routine
  5. Identify online English learning tools
  6. Demonstrate appropriate body language in different conversational contexts
  7. Hone listening and comprehension skills via movie scenes
  8. Acquire knowledge of Greeting and Introduction variations, across different English-speaking cultures
  9. Apply different types of English questions (e.g., yes/no, wh-questions)
  10. List phrases and expressions for English Apologies
  11. Identify common English Goodbye phrases
  12. Participate in daily conversations, using appropriate vocabulary and expressions
  13. Hone conversations for social and work contexts, via local films
  14. Identify appropriate formal and informal English, in different scenarios
  15. Compose basic emails, in correct format
  16. Hone speaking skills by describing various pictures, in detail
  17. Use numbers in practical situations, such as making purchases or giving information
  18. Hone price-related vocabulary in role-playing scenarios, involving shopping or transactions
