Non-Malay Singaporean elderly have some knowledge of Bahasa Pasar (colloquial) due to living in a close-knitted community with mixed races. Hence, they will benefit from learning standard Malay for more effective communication in the workplace. Furthermore, Malay is the official and main business language our neighbouring countries Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brunei uses. Today’s Singaporean elderly also consists mainly locals and foreigners having no knowledge of these languages.

 

 

Course Objective

This course equips participants with basic Malay language skills, for more diverse workplace and social interaction.

Course Outline

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  1. Recognise the difference between Bahasa Pasar and standard Malay
  2. Apply simple Malay sentence structures
  3. Demonstrate appropriate basic Malay greetings and self-introduction
  4. Demonstrate Malay small talk in formal / informal settings
  5. Employ additional vocabulary from numbers, time, dates, ordering food and drinks, shopping, paying, hobbies, as well as interests to expand their vocabulary
  6. Leverage on curated list of online Malay learning resources/mobile apps

A Certificate of Attendance will be awarded to participants who meet at least 75% attendance rate
